Ultraviolet radiation is powerful enough to damage living tissue when exposed for extended periods. Skin cancer occurs when the damage to individual cells is so great that it affects the cell’s ability to reproduce.
Methods for protecting skin from UV radiation:
- Use sunscreen with spf of 30 or greater, reapply when needed
- wear proper clothing: wide brimmed hat, long sleeves and pants
- stay under shade if able
