KANSAS CITY, Kan.- Head coach Adam Dorrel, Sr. DB Bryce Enyard, and Sr. OL Shane Smith were in attendance Tuesday for the MIAA football media day. The Northwest Missouri State University football team was ranked first in both the 2015 MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media polls, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The polls consist of votes from the 12 conference coaches and media covering the MIAA, respectively.

The 2015 Bearcats only have nine seniors, two of whom started on offense and four that started on defense. On paper, Dorrel said, Northwest is a 7-4 team. Seniors Shane Smith and Bryce Enyard sat next to Dorrel when he mentioned the 7-4 record. They understood his point that 7-4 was only on paper. The Bearcats are determined to be better than that.

“We are young, inexperienced football team,” Dorrel said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Smith, Enyard and the rest of the senior class are determined to top last season’s 10-2 season. In the spring, they came up with a motto to get the team through the rough patches, “find a way”. Enyard finished his 2014 campaign with 41 tackles, 24 solo and 1 INT. Smith looks to take his leadership into next year and help lead the young offense the Bearcats have.

“They understand that we’ve been through a lot of games,” Smith said. “We have been here for a long time. One of the things we want them to understand is we need them as much as they need us. We are going to lead the way. If they follow our paths, we will do it together.”

The last time Northwest lost four games was 2005, but that team’s fourth loss came in the NCAA Division II championship game. The polls have put no pressure on the team according to Coach Dorrel. The Bearcats open the season with an away game at Nebraska-Kearney, Thursday, August 3, 2015, at 7:00 p.m.
