WASHINGTON (AP) — The pastor who introduced Texas Gov. Rick Perry at a conservative gathering Friday says rival presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not a Christian and is in a cult because he is a Mormon.

Robert Jeffress is senior pastor at Dallas’ First Baptist Church. Jeffress endorsed Perry at the Values Voters Summit, under way in Washington. Jeffress called Perry “a proven leader, a true conservative, and a committed follower of Christ.”

But speaking of Romney, Jeffress said the former Massachusetts governor is “a good moral person” but not a Christian. He also says Mormonism is “considered a cult by the mainstream of Christianity.”

Perry’s campaign said the Texas governor disagrees with Jeffress. But the campaign did not respond to inquiries about whether the governor had agreed to have Jeffress introduce him.
