It’s not known officially if it was a tornado or straight line winds but residents of Mendon are picking up pieces of their community Friday following strong thunderstorms that moved through the area Thursday evening.

KMZU listeners reported emergency crews were working in Mendon late Thursday, alongside workers from Kansas City Power & Light, to clean up debris and to get power restored.

Chariton County Emergency Management Director Eric McKenzie described what he saw in the storms aftermath.

McKenzie added he had sent pictures (featured) as well as videos to the National Weather Service for determination of either a tornado or straight line winds.

He explained that there was certain cloud activity that leads him to believe it may have been a small scale tornado, but the Weather Service will make the final call.
