MONROE COUNTY, MO – Area residents complained about recent phone scams to area law enforcement.

On a Facebook post Friday, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says scammers continue to use the recurring ‘grandchild in trouble’ scam. The respondent attempts to convince the victim that a family member is in trouble, in jail, and needs money immediately. The sheriff says, scammers will convince residents not to divulge the information to anyone else. Law enforcement advises that it’s human nature to want to protect loved ones, but residents should confirm with a second source the validity of these claims. Victims buy money cards from retailers, and provide the number to the scammer at their direction.
