Justin Smoak’s two-run homer helped the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 last night. Jason Vargas picked up his first victory since August 10th and Brandon League earned his 34th save for the Mariners. The Royals’ only run came on an Eric Hosmer single in the sixth. The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs battle on the gridiron at Arrowhead Stadium in Week One of the NFL season. Buffalo looks to bounce back from a disappointing 4-and-12 mark last year. The Bills started the 2010 campaign losing eight in-a-row. Despite that, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel says they expect a tough challenge from an improved Bills team.
Kansas City finished 7-and-1 at home last season, including a 13-10 overtime victory over the Bills.
The Packers opened defense of their Super Bowl title with a thrilling 42-34 win over the Saints. After a pass interference call, Green Bay’s defense stopped a Mark Ingram rush at the goal line on the game’s final play to preserve the win. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy says the defense came up huge on the game’s final play.
Aaron Rodgers threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, while Greg Jennings had seven grabs for 89 yards and a score in the win.
Week 3 of the High School football season tonight. The KRLI Game of the Week is in Orrick, where the Bearcats host the Class 1 top ranked Concordia Orioles. Bearcats Coach Scott Finlay says he’s looking for maturity from his young squad.
