The High School Football regular season wraps up over the next two days with games tomorrow and Friday. Tomorrow night’s Game of the Week features more eight-man football as undefeated Hardin-Central battles the rival Norborne Pirates. The Game of the Week Preview Show begins at 6:45pm. After three games in Arlington, Texas, the 2011 World Series shifts back to St. Louis for Game Six tonight at Busch Stadium. The Rangers took two-of-three in their home ballpark to grab a three-games-to-two-lead in the best-of-seven matchup. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says he expects another great outing from starter Jaime Garcia.
Rangers manager Ron Washington says Game Six starter Colby Lewis is a confident pitcher.
The Cardinals are seeking the 11th World Series championship in franchise history and first since 2006. The Rangers have never won a World Series.
Tony La Russa is taking full responsibility for the bullpen phone mix-up that dearly cost his team. La Russa says it’s entirely his fault closer Jason Motte wasn’t warming up in the eighth inning of Game 5 Monday night. Texas scored twice in the inning beat the Cardinals in game five.
The Boston Red Sox have announced that starting pitcher John Lackey will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss all of next season. Lackey was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in the second of a five-year, $82.5 million contract.
Houston athletics director Mack Rhoades says his school is “in a good position” and will “always seek new opportunity” but is offering no timeline for the Cougars to decide their future conference affiliation. Houston has been mentioned as a potential newcomer to the Big East, which is reshaping after Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced plans to join the ACC and West Virginia was approved by Big 12 officials.
The Kansas City Chiefs have waived receiver Jeremy Horne. He played three games this season for the Chiefs while playing mostly on special teams. Kansas City also moved fullback Shane Bannon to the practice squad injured list.
The Buffalo Bills placed veteran linebacker Shawne Merriman on season-ending injured reserve yesterday because of a right Achilles injury.
It’s the same injury that forced him to go on IR last November right after the Bills signed him as a free agent.
Merriman’s Achilles unexpectedly flared up on him the Thursday before Buffalo’s 27-24 loss to the New York Giants, and forced him to miss that game.
