With all of Monday night’s suspended games completed last night, the High School football quarter final pairings are set. In Class One: Concordia hosts Archie Saturday, while Wellington-Napoleon travels to East Buchanan. In Class two action Saturday afternoon it will be Higginsville hosting Penny High/Hamilton and Macon will take on Blair Oaks.
Class Three: Richmond travels to Kansas City to play O’Hara. You can hear that game on 103.9 KRLI. Pregame Saturday afternoon at 1:15pm. In Class four: Kearney was eliminated by Savannah last night 37-16. Savannah will face Harrisonville in the Quarter finals Saturday.
Former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona has interviewed with the St. Louis Cardinals for their manager opening. That’s according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Francona managed the Red Sox for eight seasons. The team has more interviews planned for today.
The latest development in the Penn State sex-abuse scandal is the school trustees will appoint a special committee to investigate the case. Coach Joe Paterno is fighting for his job amid “eroding” support from Penn State’s board of trustees and a widening sex-abuse scandal and possible cover-up centered on former assistant and onetime heir apparent Jerry Sandusky.
Hundreds of students held a rally outside the home of Joe Paterno last night. Paterno said he’s very appreciative for the support from the students.
The scandal has left Paterno’s future with the school in doubt. Paterno’s weekly press conference that was scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled by the school. The “New York Times” also reported that Penn State is planning Paterno’s exit, perhaps within days or weeks.
NBA union president Derek Fisher says the players will not accept the NBA’s current labor offer. NBA Players Association Executive Director Billy Hunter says they won’t be forced to take what’s on the table.
NBA commissioner David Stern imposed a deadline of today for the union to accept essentially a 50-50 split of basketball-related income or the league’s offer would drop to 47-percent.
T.J. Oshie scored a goal and assisted on another as the Blues beat the Blackhawks, 3-0. Kevin Shattenkirk added a pair of assists as St. Louis took its second win in three games. Blues new head coach Ken Hitchcock says his first game at the helm was a bit overwhelming.
Jaroslav Halak stopped all 29 shots he faced to shut out the NHL’s third highest scoring offense. Corey Crawford allowed all three goals in the losing effort, the third in-a-row for Central Divison-leading Chicago.
