MISSOURI — The Missouri Department of Agriculture in conjunction with MU Extension will offer meetings to discuss stress on Missouri farms. Seven different sessions will farmland 2take place across the state from July 7-14.

“Life as a farmer is never boring, that we know for certain,” Director of Agriculture Richard Fordyce said to the Missouri Department of Agriculture. “Although I continue to believe that the future of agriculture is incredibly bright, we face challenges of different types and different magnitudes each year and 2016 is no exception. Lower commodity prices combined with input costs that haven’t reacted to the market yet have the potential to put some Missouri producers in a tough position.”

Dr. Scott Brown, MU Assistant Extension Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics, will provide an overview of current and projected financial issues facing Missouri agriculture at each session. A large portion of the meeting will focus on a panel of local farmers, agribusinesses, organizations, and state and federal agencies. Those attending will then have the chance to share their issues and discuss them with the other attendees and meeting hosts.

The MDA says, “Similar sessions are being hosted by departments of agriculture in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. After feedback is gathered, representatives from the four states will gather together to share findings and identify available resources and farm programs. These needs will also be communicated to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack.”

Registration is free. For more information or to register, please call the contact associated with the meeting you’d like to attend.
