An explosion at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, has left several people injured.  The plant is located on the eastern edge of Independence on Missouri Highway 7 and Route FF.  According to officials, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the facility, which produces most of the small-arms ammuntion used by U.S. and allied forces around the world.  The explosion was believed to have occured in building #1 and has been contained.  Six were taken to an area hospital.  The contractor, who is believed to have accidentally caused the explosion, was life-flighted in serious condition.  ATK released an official statement shortly before 5:00 p.m. saying they could not comment on the extent of injuries at this time and that it was too early to speculate on the cause of this incident or additional impacts. The incident is under investigation by the United States Army, ATK safety teams and the local authorities.

ATK released the following statement shortly before 5:00 p.m.:

ATK is currently working the incident at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and is coordinating with emergency personnel. Six people were injured; one of those was flown to the hospital by medical helicopter. We cannot comment on the extent of injuries at this time. The incident occurred in a construction area and is contained. It is too early to speculate on the cause of this incident or additional impacts at this time. The incident is under investigation by the United States Army, ATK safety teams and the local authorities.
