The Pettis County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Smithton Elementary School shortly before 9:00 a.m. of a suspicious item that had been found in a student’s backpack.
The school was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Deputies and troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded and secured the backpack as well as the exterior of the school.
Upon inspection, the device was found to be an inert antique artillery shell. No students were in danger at any time during the incident.
The school lockdown was lifted shortly before 11 a.m.
The incident was referred to the Pettis County Juvenile Office for a follow-up investigation.
