Alex Gordon smacked a solo homer to lead off the first inning for the Royals, who snapped a seven-game losing streak. Kelvin Herrera picked up the win while Greg Holland notched his 35th save. The Royals are back in action tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays at Kauffman Stadium. Jeremy Guthrie takes a 12-and-10 record into his start for Kansas City. The Royals are 65-and-64 on the season.

(St. Louis, MO) — Andrelton Simmons homered to back seven solid innings from Mike Minor, as the Braves beat the Cardinals 5-2 to avoid a four-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Matt Holliday and Allen Craig plated a run each for the Redbirds, who had won their previous four. Lance Lynn allowed four runs and nine hits in seven frames as he fell to 13-and-8 with his third straight loss. The Cardinals look to out some distance between themselves and the Cincinnati Reds when the teams open a series tonight at Busch Stadium. The Reds are two-and-a-half games behind the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central division. The Cards are tied with the Pirates for the top spot with a 76-and-54 record.

(Denver, CO) — Alec Ogletree forced a fumble and scored a touchdown and also intercepted a Peyton Manning pass, but the Rams fell at Denver 27-26 this past weekend and are 0-and-3 in the preseason. Ogletree was the 30th overall pick of this year’s draft. The Rams host Baltimore in the preseason finale on Thursday, after which they will trim down to their final 53-man season-opening roster.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Chiefs got their first preseason win of 2013 with a 26-20 overtime win over the Steelers Saturday at Heinz Field. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel hit Rico Richardson for a 15-yard touchdown pass in overtime for the win. Starting quarterback Alex Smith completed 17-of-24 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs host the Packers in their preseason finale Thursday.

(Kansas City, MO) — The Chiefs have parted ways with 14 players with their first set of roster cuts. One of those cut was quarterback Ricky Stanzi, who was the most notable name on the list. Kansas City is down to the 75-man roster ahead of the NFL deadline of tomorrow.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Matt Kenseth held off Kasey Kahne for 12 nerve-racking laps to hang on and win Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. The win is the fifth of the season for Kenseth, most in the Sprint Cup Series, and clinches a spot in the Chase for the championship. Juan Pablo Montoya was third, followed by Brian Vickers, Joey Logano, Paul Menard, Jeff Gordon, Marcos Ambrose, Greg Biffle and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
