Rookie Roenis Elias pitched neatly into the seventh inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 yesterday for a three-game sweep. Elias limited the Royals to one run and five singles over 6 2-3 innings. He struck out five, walked two and improved to 4-1 in June. Kansas City has lost four straight.
Mark Ellis drove in two runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 yesterday. The Cardinals have won two in a row and seven of 10. Philadelphia has lost two straight after a season-high five-game winning streak. Carlos Martinez allowed three runs over five innings.

Missouri’s Carl Edwards snapped Hendrick Motorsports’ five-race winning streak with his first career victory on a road course. The Columbia native sailed past Marcos Ambrose on a restart with 25 laps remaining to win yesterday at Sonoma Raceway. Edwards had never finished higher than third at Sonoma.
