>>Chiefs Clip Cowboys For 2-and-0 Start

(Kansas City, MO)  —  The Chiefs are off to an 2-and-0 start following a hard-fought 17-16 win over the Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium.  Alex Smith threw for 23 yards, including touchdown passes to Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe, as KC improved to 2-and-0.  The two wins matches the Chiefs’ win total from all of last season.  KC plays at Philadelphia on Thursday.

>>Rams Fall Short Against Falcons

(Atlanta, GA)  —  The Rams fell behind 21-0 in the second quarter and lost 31-24 to the Falcons in Atlanta. Julio Jones had 11 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown for Atlanta.  Sam Bradford threw for 352 yards, three touchdowns and an interception as the Rams dropped to 1-and-1.  Tavon Austin had two TD catches in defeat.  The Rams next game is Sunday at Dallas.

>>KU Falls, K-State Wins

(Undated)  —  Kansas football lost while Kansas State won on Saturday.  The Jayhawks surrendered 10 fourth-quarter points to lose 23-14 at Rice.  KU is now 1-and-1 and will host Louisiana Tech this Saturday.  The Wildcats beat UMass 37-7 to improve to 2-and-1.  K-State plays at Texas this Saturday.  Missouri was off and will play at Indiana this Saturday.

>>Avila Homers Sink Royals

(Detroit, MI)  —  Alex Avila hit two home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning, as the Tigers topped the Royals 3-2 at Comerica Park.  Alcides Escobar scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to tie the game at two for KC.  Alex Gordon hit his 20th home run for the Royals.  Jeremy Guthrie gave up 13 hits in a complete-game loss.  The Royals open their final home stand of the season tonight as the Indians come to Kauffman Stadium.  James Shields will start for the Royals.  He’s 11-and-9 with a 3.38 ERA.  Scott Kazmir starts for the Tribe.  It’s a rematch from Wednesday when the Royals won 6-2 in Cleveland.  KC is three-and-a-half out in the Wild Card race.

>>Cardinals Crush Mariners

(St. Louis, MO)  —  Yadier Molina went 4-for-5 with a solo homer as the Cardinals crushed the Mariners 12-2 at Busch Stadium.  Matt Holliday added three hits and two RBI and Matt Adams hit a two-run homer for St. Louis, which took two-of-three in the series.  The Cards had 19 hits in all.  Shelby Miller pitched five innings of two-run ball for his 14th win.  The Cardinals open a seven-game road trip tonight at Colorado.  They play the first of four against the Rockies at Coors Field tonight, with Lance Lynn slated to oppose Jorge De La Rosa.  Lynn is 13-and-10 with a 4.23 ERA.  De La Rosa is 16-and-6 with a 3.49 ERA.  The Cardinals and Pirates are tied atop the NL Central at 87-and-62.

>>Matt Kenseth Outlasts Field, Rain For Win At Chicagoland

(Joliet, IL)  —  Matt Kenseth battled the field and a nearly six-hour rain delay to pick up a win in the Geico 400 from Chicagoland Speedway in NASCAR’s first race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.  The top seed passed Kyle Busch with 23 laps to go on a restart and held on for his sixth win of the season.  Busch held on for a second-place finish while Kevin Harvick was third.  Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top-five.  Kenseth has an eight-point advantage on Kyle Busch in the points.  The Chase heads to Loudon next week.
