DETROIT (AP) — Rookie Drew Smyly struck out a career-high 10 in six impressive innings and Delmon Young homered as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 last night. Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez (1-5) had his winless streak extend to 10 starts, allowing four runs in 5 2-3 innings. He has not won since beating the Los Angeles Angels on April 8.
The Royals are in Detroit to face the Tigers again this afternoon at 3:05.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ricky Nolasco allowed an unearned run in six innings and Jose Reyes got the go-ahead RBI with an infield hit in the seventh to lead the Miami Marlins to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. St. Louis was 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position, stranding five at third base to frustrate a sellout crowd that waited patiently in a game that began in 103-degree heat.
The Redbirds and Marlins will match up at Busch Stadium today at 3:10.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday is replacing St. Louis Cardinals teammate Yadier Molina on the National League All-Star team. Molina was placed on the bereavement list yesterday after his wife’s grandfather died. The team said the catcher returned to his native Puerto Rico. It’ll be the sixth All-Star appearance and third in a row for Holliday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is banking on a boost from All-Star game festivities in Kansas City this weekend as it continues to recover from the brink of closure. The museum had fallen on hard times during the economic downturn, due in part to politics and in-fighting. But the museum has largely recovered over the past year, just in time for Major League Baseball to bring its annual Midsummer Classic to its doorstep.
The Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association will be hosting its fourth annual Missouri 8-Man Football Senior All Star Game on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at William Jewell College in Liberty.
40 of the state’s top 8-Man senior football players have been invited to participate in this event. They will report Thursday, July 5th to William Jewell College and practice for three days as a member of either the Blue or Red team before the event.
The teams will be coached by area 8-Man football coaches from the eight teams that made the state playoffs last Fall. Coach Chuck Borey of Worth County is the head coach of the Blue Team. He is assisted by Dan Collins of Stanberry, Tyler Anderson of Southwest Ludlow and Caleb Crooker of Northwest (Hughesville). The Red Team is led by head coach Brian Messer of Mound City. He is assisted by Dana Dill of South Holt, Kurt Thacker of Hardin-Central, and Mark Juhl of St. Joseph Christian. The teams were “drafted” by the coaches; thereby pitting previous teammates against one another in certain instances.
Admission is $7.00 per person. Gates open up at 5:00 p.m. T-shirts, full color programs and DVDs of the game will be for sale throughout the contest. All proceeds go to the Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association. For more information and to purchase a highlight DVD, please go to http://mo8mancoaches.com
