NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the discussions says Major League Baseball is preparing to kick Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez out of the game for life unless he accepts a lengthy suspension for his role in the sport’s latest drug scandal. A-Rod is the most prominent of 14 players linked in media reports over the past seven months to Biogenesis of America, a closed Florida anti-aging clinic that allegedly distributed banned performance-enhancing drugs.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Billy Butler’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Royals held off the Twins 4-3 at Target Field. KC snapped a 2-all tie on a fielding error and Butler’s hit provided the needed insurance. Jeremy Guthrie got the win and Greg Holland his 28th save. KC last won eight straight back in 2003. The Royals will look to keep rolling on the road as they wrap up their three-game series in Minnesota today. KC will go for a three-game sweep of the Twins with James Shields opposing Minnesota’s Scott Diamond. The Royals are 5-and-0 on their current road trip. They play three against the Mets this weekend.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Royals added some outfield depth before the Major League Baseball trade deadline. They acquired 29-year-old outfielder Justin Maxwell from the Astros for minor league pitcher Kyle Smith. Injuries have limited Maxwell to 40 games this season, but he slugged 18 home runs in 315 at-bats for the Astros in 2012.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — Russell Martin connected for a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Pirates to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals at PNC Park. Pittsburgh has taken the first four games of the five-game set to move two-and-a-half games ahead of St. Louis for first place in the NL Central. Adam Wainwright allowed four of the five runs for the Cards across seven innings, but reliever Trevor Rosenthal took the loss. Matt Holliday drove in two runs as St. Louis dropped its seven straight. The series closes out tonight.

(Pittsburgh, PA) — The Cardinals placed outfielder Shane Robinson on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Robinson has appeared in 65 games this season with the Cards and is batting .263 with two home runs. To fill their roster spots, the Cards recalled outfielders Brock Peterson and Adron Chambers from Triple-A Memphis.

(St. Joseph, MO) — The Chiefs return to business this morning after a day off on Wednesday. Practice at Missouri Western State University begins at 8:15 a.m. The team will hold the Gatorade Junior Training Camp this Saturday for boys and girls in grades three through eight. It will teach football skills and the importance of hydration.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL Pro Bowl rosters for next year will be selected in a draft by team captains, with Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice assisting as alumni captains. The NFL will abandon its old AFC vs. NFC format that has been in place since 1971. The league says fan voting will determine the players in the draft pool.
