High school basketball came back in full force around the area last night. We sent Mike Stone out to broadcast from Richmond for the Spartans home opener as Excelsior Springs came to town…
The final score was Richmond 55 Excelsior Springs 40. The Spartans are now 5 – 4 on the year, while Excelsior Springs drops to 1 – 8.
The MRVC/I-70 Lafayette County tournament tipped off last night with four boys games. Top seed Higginsville beat Concordia 71 – 27. It was 5th seeded Knob Noster with a slight upset in a close game, 43 – 40 over Wellington. The host team #2 Santa Fe topped Lexington 56 – 41 and in the nightcap the third seeded Carrollton Trojans 47 St. Paul 36. Now the Wednesday night bracket is set as Santa Fe will take on Carrollton at 7 and Higginsville moves on to face Knob Noster in the 8:30 game Wednesday.
The opening round of girls play gets started today in the Lafayette County tournament at Santa Fe as the host team takes on the top seed Higginsville at 4 this afternoon. After that St. Paul and Lexington square off in the 4-5 battle at 5:30. The number two seeded Concordia Orioles face Knob Noster at 7 and number 3 Carrollton battles Wellington at 8:30 tonight.
At the New Franklin tournament last night the top seeded Sturgeon girls beat Keytesville 72 – 26 behind the 17 points of Bridgett Arends who led all scorers. Krissy Arends chipped in 15. On the Keytesville side their leading scorer was Caitlin Atterbury with 12.
The second girls game of the night from New Franklin had #4 Fayette over Slater 48 – 35. Ellie Johnson was the top overall scorer with 22 points for Fayette and Samantha Reed added 8. For Slater Mary Gonzalez had 15 and Olivia Knox added 12.
On the boys side from New Franklin last night the top seeded Sturgeon team blew past Slater 60 – 39. For Sturgeon Spencer Kelly had 24 and Lorenzo Chisholm added 8. Caleb Pemberton was the leader for Slater with 13 points.
After that the #2 Fayette boys beat Keytesville 79 – 36 thanks to 31 points from Bruce Marshall and 13 from Rudy Williams. For Keytesville Jerry Kuhler added 11 and Jon Little had 8 points.
There were three games from the 55th annual Braymer Invitational last night. In the girls bracket the top seeded Norborne Lady Pirates got an opening round bye, they will take Tina Avalon Thursday night. The Tina Avalon ladies moved to the winning side of the bracket with a 43 – 28 win over Stet. Tina Avalon had the leading scorer overall as Kelsey Garber put up 14. Ashley McCracken had 9 and Jenna Holmer added 8 points. Alex Paul got into double figures for Stet as she scored 12.
On the boys side from Braymer the number 3 seed Hardin Central beat Norborne 74 – 55 behind 20 point efforts from both Damon Johnson and Colton Layman. Cole Leakey also added 18. For the Pirates Pride Chase led all scorers as he came up with 22. Jacob Uribe had 14 and Ross Lyon added 10.
The final game of the evening last night from Braymer saw the 4 seed Tina Avalon boys beat Breckenridge 48 – 40. Noah Meyers had 14 and Joe Ray added 11 for Tina Avalon. On the Breckenridge side of the ball Anthony Allred led all scorers with 22 and Cole Gatewood chipped in 16 points.
Tonight from the Braymer Invitational the number 3 seeded Braymer girls team takes on Breckenridge at 4:30. At 6 tonight the #2 Braymer boys face Stet. Back to a girls matchup at 7:30 featuring #2 Southwest against the Maysville JV and then at 9 o’clock tonight the top seed on the boys side Southwest will face the Maysville JV.
From the Stover tournament Marshall beat Holden 63 – 56 and Cole Camp topped Stover 68 – 43 in boys action. On the girls side it was Eldon 44 Iberia 29. Osage beat Stover by 10 44 – 34…and Holden topped Cole Camp 56 – 52.
In the Otterville Classic there were a pair of girls matchups. The Russellville JV beat Chilhowee 55 – 33 and it was Lincoln 42 NW Hughesville 38.
From the Marceline tournament on the boys side Milan beat Macon County 60 – 59 and Marceline topped Bevier (buh-veer) 64 – 30. For the girls it was Milan 67 Bucklin 16 and Bevier got past Macon County 54 – 42.
