The Class 3 District 15 Tournament in Richmond kicked-off Monday night with the ladies bracket and here’s the report filed by KMZU’s Mike Stone…

The first of four games was between The Lawson Lady Cardinals and Lexington Minute Women. It was close in the first but Lawson began to separate in the second quarter and they never looked back going on to defeat Lexington 63-34.

The Second game was between the St. Paul Lutheran Lady Saints and the Richmond Lady Spartans. It was close until late in the first half when the Lady Saints separated and led at halftime 22-12. In the second half the Lady Saints continued to press the full court and scored 21 additional points leading to a 43-32 victory. Richmond was led in scoring by Haley Padget with 8. For St. Paul Lutheran Marissa Brackman; who was a presence on both sides of the court and forced many turnovers, led with23 points, 8 points came from Devon Heins and 6 from Suzanne Allen.

In the third match-up it was Carrollton against Penney Hamilton. The Lady Trojans struggled throughout the game turning the ball over repeatedly, travelling, double dribbling and committing other costly mistakes. The Lady Hornets took full advantage of Carrollton’s missteps and went on to lead 35-8 at the half. The second half was no different and Carrollton was defeated 67-19. Carrollton was led by Tierra Winn with 6. For Penney, Elsie Greenwood led with 20 points, with 18 came from Paige Kline and 18 from Katrina Grossman.

In the final match-up it was the Brookfield Lady Bulldogs coming in as the underdog with a 9-16 regular season record. Lafayette County C-1 was the favorite coming into the contest with a record of 23-4. However, Brookfield jumped out to a 10 point lead only to see it dwindle to a 29-28 lead at the half. Brookfield came out and continued to play Lafayette County tough and close. The Lady Huskers were able to finally match Brookfield and took a four point lead. But Brookfield was not done, and the battle was back and forth with several lead changes. With just 2 seconds left both teams sat at 59. But a costly foul by Lafayette County put Alesa Frey at the foul line for two, which Frey made to give the Lady Bulldogs the lead. Lafayette County made a valiant effort in the last two seconds but the shot went wide and Brookfield got the big upset 61-59. The Lady Huskers were led by Emma Dyer who put up 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Abbie Mahnken contributed 14 and 13 points came from the efforts of Sam Davis. Brookfield was led in points by Amanda Slater with 17 and 15 from Bailey Parks.

The ladies get a day off and the semi- final match ups will be Penny and Brookfield in the first contest at 5:30 Wednesday evening followed by the semi-final match-up between Lawson and St. Paul Lutheran.

The boys four game bracket kicks off Tuesday night with Lafayette taking on Lexington, followed by Carrollton against St. Paul Lutheran, Lawson vs. Brookfield and Richmond will take on Penney Hamilton in the final contest.
