KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There are only seven players left on the Kansas City Chiefs roster who’ve been with the team since the 2008 season, who have enjoyed scant few highs and unimaginable lows. In that time span, there have been four coaching changes. There’s been two seasons in which the Chiefs went 2-14, matching the franchise mark for futility. But all of those years of disappointment may be pushed aside as the Chiefs visit Indianapolis on Saturday searching for their first postseason win since 1993.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The mother of former Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the team after exhuming his body so that his brain could be examined. The lawsuit filed by Cheryl Shepherd alleges that Belcher was subjected to “repetitive head trauma” and that the Chiefs failed to provide adequate medical care before he killed his girlfriend and then committed suicide last December.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The NFL says Peyton Manning’s single-season record for 5,477 yards passing will stand. The league’s official stat service reviewed a 7-yard pass from Manning to wide receiver Eric Decker and determined it will remain a forward pass and not a lateral. Had it been ruled a lateral, Manning would have finished six yards shy of Drew Brees’ old record for passing yardage.

HOUSTON (AP) — The 2-14 Houston Texans have reportedly secured the services of a new head coach. Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that Penn State’s Bill O’Brien has reached an agreement to coach the Texans. O’Brien took over at Penn State after the departure of Joe Paterno two years ago. Prior to that he was an offensive coach with the New England Patriots.

College Football

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The oldest college football bowl game, the Rose Bowl, is taking place this afternoon in Pasadena, Calif. This year’s game has Stanford of the Pac-12 playing Michigan State of the Big Ten. The first Rose Bowl was played in 1902 when Michigan beat Stanford 49-0. Today’s game is the 100th edition of the game.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — There is one bowl game on tap this evening and the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., has Baylor playing Central Florida. Each team has a record of 11-1. Today’s game marks the first time each school has appeared in a BCS game.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Jaden Schwartz scored for the sixth straight game and the St. Louis Blues hung on to beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 last night. T.J. Oshie also had a goal for St. Louis, which is 5-0-2 in its past seven road games. The Blues are 8-1-2 in their last 11 games overall.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The NHL’s Winter Classic is taking place today at the University of Michigan football stadium. A crowd of more than 105,000 is expected for the Red Wings-Maple Leafs game. Each team is from the Atlantic Division and each has 45 points on the season, nine points back of first-place Boston.
