A man is dead after a 15 hour standoff with authorities in southern Howard County. The sheriff’s department said deputies were called to a domestic dispute at a home on County Road 342 in Franklin shortly before midnight Thursday. A SWAT team was dispatched around 3:30 a.m. Friday. The suspect reportedly assaulted his ex-wife. She was able to escape with non life-threatening injuries.
Negotiators said they tried several times to get the man to surrender. At least 17 shots of tear gas were fired into the home, according to a sheriff’s department report.
The standoff ended with the suspect taking his own life. The man’s body was found shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday. Authorities said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name has not been released.
