PLATTE CITY, Mo – A former student of Platte City school was sentenced to a prison term Thursday, July 7, 2016, after pleading guilty to rape.

A press release from Platte County prosecutor, Eric Zahnd names Dakota D. Cochran, 17, pleaded guilty to first degree rape, and second degree child molestation.

Zahnd commended the courage of the victim, who reportedly suffered disrespect from peers who initially supported the perpetrator.

Zahnd said, in the event a jury trial had been needed, the court may have been appraised of other instances of sexual misconduct perpetrated by Cochran, due to a 2014, Missouri amendment allowing juries to be informed of prior criminal acts of potential sex offenders.

Cochran will spend 8 years in prison, and be registered as a lifelong sex offender.
