COLUMBIA, MO – Property theft is reportedly on the rise in Columbia.

According to Columbia Police department, thefts from motor vehicles have increased by nearly 50% compared to last year. So far this year 655 calls to police referred to thefts from automobiles. That is up from 448 reports last year.  Police recommend rolling up windows and locking doors, but even this may not deter some people. According to police, a theft last Friday from a locked vehicle resulted in six firearms, and several cases of ammunition being stolen. they also say, the thefts are occurring throughout the city.

Residents are encouraged to stow firearms or other items inside the vehicle so they are not in plain sight.
