The 13th annual Toonfest is Saturday in Marceline. Click to hear KMZU’s Bob Allen talk with Toonfest Chairman Richard Switzer:

Richard Switzer

Switzer says there’s more to the festival than cartoonists talking about their work. A princess tea party complete with “Bangles, Baubles and Beads” for the girls is not to be outdone by the Muddy Pearl pirate ship that sails up Yellow Creek every year. According to Switzer, there’s also a BBQ contest and a parade.

Of course, the main attraction of the event held in honor of Walt Disney is a symposium featuring comic artists Jeff Keane, Lee Judge, Glenn McCoy, and Bill Whitehead. Switzer says the festival is a rite of passage for many of the cartoonists for whom Marceline is a destination. There’s a several year waiting list for artists who want to come to walk where Walt Disney walked as a child.

The festivities kick off at eight a.m. and run until five at locations throughout Marceline. You can find a full schedule of events on the Toonfest website.
