Eugene Graham was taken into custody Monday and Sheriff Steve Cox issued the following press release:

January 19, 2015

Today around noon a citizen and child were near Pikes Lake in Poosey Park location in northwest Livingston County. The citizen saw a man believed to be Robert E. Graham and the same vehicle previously reported by the media near their location. That person was able to call law enforcement in Grundy County.

Information was submitted to Livingston County and officers then coordinated to secure a perimeter. Members of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, NITRO ATF Unit, Missouri Department of Conservation, Chillicothe Department of Emergency Services, and an Investigator from the State of Iowa were involved at the scene.

Investigation in the area revealed Robert Graham had fled in a car to an inner and remote area of Poosey Park referred to as “Panther’s Den” where he took a strong defensive position on a high ridge.

After the 911 Dispatcher was able to obtain the suspects cell phone number, Sheriff Cox subsequently had multiple phone conversations through the day with the suspect in attempt to obtain a peaceful resolution to this situation. Unfortunately the suspect would not agree to any offers or requests and reported he was well armed with a rifle and revolver and had a person with him armed with a shotgun with slugs and a handgun. The suspect allegedly gave multiple indications he would not kill himself but have the officers end his life.

The sheriff requested the assistance of the MSHP Special Response Unit and their Bearcat Armored Personnel Vehicle. The MSHP also sent a helicopter to the scene to provide and overhead view of the situation and help locate the suspect’s exact position.  The Bearcat transported the team and they approached the suspect and were able to compel the suspect to surrender.

Robert E. Graham is now in custody at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle and scene at Poosey Park are being worked as a crime scene and we are turning any evidence over to the Iowa Officials to aide in their attempted murder investigation.

Fortunately this situation ended without anyone being injured. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victim and family of the attempted murder.

A special “Thank You” to the citizen that reported seeing Graham in Poosey Park and to the local media for their efforts in sharing this information and educating citizens since the incident in Grundy County and through today.

I would like to commend the following groups for their extreme professionalism and teamwork (please forgive me if I mistakenly omit someone:     Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputies, Missouri State Highway Patrol, NITRO-ATF Task Force, Chillicothe Department of Emergency Services, Troop H and Chillicothe Dispatchers, Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Investigator from the State of Iowa.
