Press Release from the Missouri Veterans Home

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Normally held the first Saturday in October, the Veterans Assistance League (VAL) will host this year’s 11th Annual Run for Freedom 5K, 10K and Poker Walk on Saturday, September 28 at 9 a.m. at Missouri Veterans Home, 1300 Veterans Rd., Warrensburg, Mo. This USATF certified event offers professional timing services, moisture wicking t-shirts, medals for runners in 12 different age categories, cash prizes for overall winners, great door prizes and refreshments. New this year, the first 50 entrants will be automatically entered in a drawing to win $100 cash. The popular “Dollar Dash” raffle where a $1 ticket buys a chance to win $500 cash will also continue this year.

The Run for Freedom raises money to support the Home’s 200 Veteran Heroes who represent service in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Bosnia and peacetime operations. Veterans participate in the Poker Walk free of charge with the help of volunteers who push their wheelchairs along the route.

“Last year, we raised enough money to replace the ailing soft serve ice cream machine in the Canteen,” said Eric Endsley, Administrator. “This year, we hope to purchase another ‘Go Anywhere’ tandem wheelchair bicycle. This unique piece of equipment, which is basically a wheelchair mounted to the front of a bicycle, will enable our Recreation Therapy staff to take our Veterans out for nostalgic, fresh air bike rides on beautiful days.”

VAL is the sole nonprofit dedicated to providing for the social, moral, physical and educational welfare of Veterans living at MVH-Warrensburg. VAL’s all volunteer board ensures there are no administrative fees and all monies raised directly benefit the Veterans.

Registration is $20 for the 5K, $25 for the 10K, and $15 for the Poker Walk. Online registration is available at Sponsorship and additional information is also available by calling Jen Eaton, Communications Coordinator, at (660) 543-5064.
