Click to hear KMZU’s Kristie Cross speak with Lt. John Hotz with the Missouri State Highway Patrol:

John Hotz

With snow in the forecast for most of the state this weekend, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to keep safe on the roadways.  Lieutenant Hotz said  it’s important to make certain your vehicle has a full tank of fuel and is in good working condition. There are a few emergency items that should also be kept in the car.  “Make sure you have an ice scraper in there,” said Hotz, “Maybe also some tire chains and battery cables, as well as a flashlight, blankets, a bag of sand, and some snacks.”

Lieutenant Hotz  said it’s important to adjust for the situation.  “It seems like the first couple of snows we have each year, people have forgotten how to drive in that environment,” said Hotz, “So, in addition to having your vehicle in the right condition, it’s important to also have your state of mind in the proper condition.  We know we’re going to have to slow down and allow extra distance between us and the vehicle in front of us.  The biggest thing is that, if you don’t have to be out, just avoid travelling during those times.”

If you find yourself needing assistance on the roadways, highway patrol troop headquarters can be reached by dialing *55 on your cellphone.
